NSU Softball Signs Six for 2006-07 Academic Year

Aberdeen, S.D. - Northern State Head Softball Coach Terri Holmes has announced the signing of six student-athletes for the 2006-07 academic year. Tara Bruns, Heather Correll, Samantha Francis, Nicole Janssen, Pamela Powers and Jill Sjoerdsma are the newest members of Northern State Softball.
“We are very proud and excited about our new student-athletes, who are all both solid academically and athletically. They will all compete for a starting position as well as bring some much needed depth to our squad. They will help us take the next step to compete for a conference championship,” said Holmes. Wolves have Two Named to NSIC Softball All-Conference Team
The Northern State University Softball team had two players named to the NSIC All-Conference Teams. Zomarie Lozano (Jr., SS., Juncos, Puerto Rico) was named to the NSIC First Team All-Conference while Luciola Figueroa (Sr., C., Puerto Rico) was named honorable mention.
Zomarie Lozano led the Wolves with a .420 (63/150) batting average, a .633 slugging percentage and a .435 on base percentage. Lozano also had 16 doubles, two triples, and four home runs on the season. She scored 27 runs with 27 RBI and 95 total bases. Defensively Lozano had a .926 fielding percentage with 65 put outs and 85 assists.
In overall games, Lozano led the NSIC with her .420 batting average. She also finished third with her 63 hits and 16 doubles and fourth in slugging percentage and total bases.
Luciola Figueroa finished second on the team with a .364 (39/107) batting average, a .505 slugging percentage, and .410 on base percentage. Figueroa had six doubles, three triples, and one home run. On the season she was able to score 14 runs and tally 16 RBI. In her 107 at bats Figueroa only struck out six times. Defensively she had a fielding percentage of .952 with 177 put outs and 21 assists.
Figueroa was sixth in the NSIC with her .364 batting average.
Northern State finished off the 2006 season with a 17-34 overall record and a 3-11 mark in the NSIC. The 17 wins is the most wins for any Wolves softball team. Full Release

Jenna Drey Named to NSIC Softball All-Tournament Team
Crookston, Minn. - Northern State junior centerfielder Jenna Drey (Burke, S.D.) was named to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) All-Tournament for her performance in Crookston, Minn. over the weekend. The all-tournament team consisted of 11 players, one for each position including a designated player and two pitchers.
Drey was selected to the all-tournament team for her stellar defensive play in centerfield over the weekend. Drey recorded six put-outs from her centerfield position in the three games. Although the Wolves lost in the first round 8-0 to third seeded Winona State, the seventh seeded Wolves ended the sixth seeded Bemidji State season in the second round win a 2-1 win. The Wolves eventually lost on day two of the tournament to top seeded SW Minnesota State 9-0 in five innings. Offensively, Drey did double in the Winona State game.
Concordia St. Paul was eventually crowned NSIC Tournament Champion with a 1-0 win in nine innings over SW Minnesota State.
Northern State softball finished the season 17-34 overall and 3-11 in the NSIC. The 17 wins amounts to the most victories for a NSU Softball team in the history of the program (started in 1982).

Northern State Adds Ten More in Spring Signing
ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State head softball coach Terri Holmes is proud to announce the signing of ten more student-athletes to the 2006 squad. This class will mark Holmes first full recruiting class after joining the NSU staff last summer. Holmes has now added twelve new players, including three transfers from Si Tanka University and the return of Sara Lipetzky, to a team that had one of its best records in the past eight years in 2005.
“We are very excited about our recruiting class. We have strengthened ourselves in many key positions. We have also added quality people who will be a good fit at Northern. When you add the quality of players that will return for the 2005 season along with our new players we will be a very exciting and fun team to watch,” commented Holmes. Full List of Signees
